About Centers

Our mission is to help develop the capacities of families to become self-reliant, to improve the quality of their lives, and to participate in rebuilding their community.

Founded in 1971,

Centers for New Horizons, Inc. (Centers) is a nonprofit organization that assists children, youth, and families in becoming self-reliant, improving the quality of their lives, and participating in rebuilding their community. With 200+ full-time staff, most of whom live in or near its service communities, Centers provides programs in locations throughout Chicago that reach over 6,000 families daily.

Our agency exists to serve and partner with community residents in their efforts to bring about positive changes. We envision that through our focus on community collaborations, a unified, well-organized community is built. We have adopted a 2Gen model of service delivery, using evidenced-based practices to provide the following programs: Early Learning and Education, Youth Development, Community Partnerships, Workforce & Economic Development.

We were founded by Dr. Sokoni Karanjato to provide educational, health and human services, advocacy, and community and economic development programs to residents on Chicago’s near South Side.

With a focus on the African American community, we assist families to educate and develop themselves to be economically self-reliant, to enhance the quality of their lives and to contribute to the revitalization of the Bronzeville community.

Our educational focus is directly related to this mission and is reflected in our community-centered child development, human services, and economic development programs.
